Dr. David Sebastián obtained his PhD in Biochemistry in 2006 from the University of Barcelona. He carried out his doctoral thesis in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Pharmacy, under the supervision of Professor Fausto G. Hegardt and Dr. Guillermina Asins. In 2003, he was a visiting researcher in the group of Professor Gerald I. Shulman at Yale University. In 2007, he joined the group of Professor Antonio Zorzano at the IRB Barcelona as a CIBERDEM postdoctoral researcher (Center for Networked Biomedical Research on Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases). In 2022, he joined the Department of Biochemistry and Physiology of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona as a Lecturer. He is currently an Associate Professor in the same department, principal investigator of the “Mitochondria, Metabolic Diseases and Aging” group at the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB), and a collaborating researcher at CIBERDEM. Dr. David Sebastián’s research focuses on the regulation of metabolism and its interaction with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Specifically, his interests center on studying the impact of alterations in mitochondrial function on the development of metabolic diseases and other conditions linked to aging. He has authored more than 60 research articles in journals such as PNAS, The EMBO Journal, Cell, Nature Communications, Aging Cell, and Autophagy. He has contributed to the training of graduate and postgraduate students, supervising numerous doctoral theses and degree/master projects.
