The selection of both the recognition element and hapten conjugates has a direct impact on the sensitivity and selectivity of biosensors. In fact, an increasing use of recombinant antibodies, chimeric protein receptors molecularly imprinted polymers or epitope mimetic peptides (“mimotopes”) has been witnessed in several fields in the last years, due to their attractive features, including robustness, sensitivity, selectivity and the possibility of large-scale in vitro production at relatively low cost.
