Descripción de la oferta

We are seeking enthusiastic and committed candidates to join our research team at the University of the Balearic Islands (https://plantmed.uib.es/en/) – INAGEA as a PhD candidate and work on the evolution of photosynthetic traits.
Why the most important enzyme in the biosphere, Rubisco, subject to a long history of selective pressures, exhibits catalytic imperfections represents one of the most fascinating, unresolved enigmas in the field of plant science. You will work on the comprehension of this and other enigmas in relation to the functionality of the Rubisco, by exploring the natural range of the enzyme’s catalytic variation and deciphering the underlying molecular mechanisms in key strategic groups during the evolution of photosynthetic domains. You will also characterize physiological (carbon concentrating mechanisms) and cellular anatomical traits, and investigate co-evolution patterns and trade-offs between these traits and Rubisco, and how they determine the photosynthetic performance of the species under variable conditions.
You will have the opportunity to learn and apply a wide range of cutting-edge and frontier methodologies from diverse fields, such as plant biochemistry, ecophysiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics to map Rubisco variability.

Tasks and responsibilities
• complete a PhD thesis within the official appointment duration of four years;
• undertake close collaboration with other research groups on the photosynthetic field, including abroad stages;
• learn techniques and methodologies in the field of plant ecophysiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics;
• be an active member of the research group and take responsibility for shared tasks; discuss your work with the group members and during meetings, incorporate feedback and give input to others;
• take a leading role in writing manuscripts;
• participate in the PhD training program on Plant Biology.
• assist in teaching and supervise Bachelor and Master theses.

Perfil buscado

• a MSc degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics or similar;
• a good level of English.

Presentación de solicitudes

If you are interested in the job, contact Jeroni Galmés (jeroni.galmes@uib.cat), with:
• a detailed CV on your education and work experience;
• a letter of motivation;
• an extract of grades during the BSc and MSc degrees;
• the names and email addresses of two references who can provide letters of recommendation.

We accept applications until 30 November 2024.
