Transmission electron micrographs (6000x) of mouse hearts before (left) and after (right) ischemia and subsequent reperfusion. Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cells, appear well-preserved and organized in healthy hearts, whereas ischemia-reperfusion causes disorganization and disruption of mitochondrial ultrastructure.
